BE-HyFE visits Bekaert facilities

Fostering well-rounded and holistic academics goes beyond theoretical understanding—it requires immersing researchers in the real-world applications of their work. By exposing academics to the tangible impact of their research, we bridge the gap between academia and industry. This hands-on exposure not only deepens understanding but also ignites innovation by demonstrating how theoretical knowledge transforms into practical solutions.

To this end, we organize site visits that offer researchers a front-row seat to cutting-edge industrial advancements. Yesterday, we had the privilege of visiting Bekaert’s hydrogen facilities in Zwevegem and Deerlijk, a Belgian company known for its remarkable evolution from producing barbed wire to leading markets in tire reinforcement and many other steel (and non-steel)-wired solutions. Our focus, however, was on Bekaert’s groundbreaking innovations in hydrogen technology—developed right here in Belgium.

A highlight of the visit was the Bekaert Tech Campus, where we witnessed their hydrogen test facilities in action. This hands-on experience included an in-depth look at Currento®, Bekaert’s state-of-the-art porous transport layer portfolio, designed for hydrogen production in both PEM and AEM electrolysis systems. Seeing these cutting-edge technologies in operation was a vivid reminder of how academic research can directly shape and support advancements in sustainability and energy innovation.

It was very inspiring for both parties to show each other the work that has been done on the R&D part, both academic and industrially and to discuss the many aspects of this technology.

By stepping out of the lab and into industrial environments, academics gain invaluable insights into how their work can drive real-world change. This connection not only enriches their perspective but also fosters collaboration, creativity, and a stronger commitment to impactful research. It is through these bridges between academia and industry that we unlock the full potential of innovation, ensuring that research isn’t confined to the page but thrives as a force for progress in society.
